Beau is a 4-year-old Dogue de Bordeaux who came to West Hatch after being found living in unsuitable conditions with four other dogs. He arrived very underweight, but he's now up to his perfect weight!
Life hasn't been easy for Beau, and when he first arrived he was understandably reserved. True to his breed, he can be a little cautious at first, but with patience and gentle handling, his confidence has grown. Now we're seeing the softer, more playful side of his character begin to shine through.
Beau enjoys life's simple pleasures - rolling in the grass, watching birds, and searching for treats. He's not overly demonstrative with his affection, but he has his own quiet ways of showing love: a gentle nudge to your leg, leaning in for a stroke along his flank, or a soulful look that says it all.
Although he lived alongside four large dogs before, Beau can get very excited when meeting dogs out and about. He is extremely strong, so he'll need an experienced handler who can manage his strength and continue his training. We've already seen progress, Beau is learning to 'watch and move on' rather than pulling towards every dog he sees.
Beau would suit a calm, adult-only, semi-rural or rural home where he can adjust gradually to his new life. Due to his size and strength, we feel he would be happiest as the only pet in the household. He would also benefit from having someone at home most of the time, who can slowly help him get used to being left alone. His ideal family will have experience with Dogues de Bordeaux, mastiffs, or other large bull breeds.
Despite his dignified nature, Beau has a playful streak, he surprised us all by leaping into a car and happily sitting on a lap for a four-mile journey! Beau is also spotlessly clean in his kennel, so we don't anticipate any issues with housetraining.
With time, patience, and a gentle approach, Beau will blossom into a loyal, loving, and noble companion. He may not be overly affectionate, but what he offers in quiet loyalty and dignity is truly special.
Beau has a few medical issues, so future medication costs should be carefully considered before applying. Our vet will discuss this with applicants before any meets are arranged.

If you are interested in adopting an animal from West Hatch RSPCA, please have a look on "ÅÝܽÊÓƵ" in the first instance. Once you have seen an animal you are interested in, you can apply easily online via the link to a google form at the bottom of their profile. Once we receive the application, it will be reviewed by a member of staff, and if you are a suitable match we will then make contact to discuss the animal further. This will be either by email initially or by phone. We will then ask you to email us photos of your home and garden, as well as ID. This continues to replace the homevisit that we would have carried out pre-covid. We can then make an appointment for you to come to the centre to meet your chosen animal before you commit to adoption.
