Vegetarianism and veganism

We must reduce the number of farmed animals being reared in the UK, and vegan and vegetarian lifestyles can help. If that's not for you, we can all still make a difference with small diet changes to reduce our animal product consumption. The reality is, the vast majority of people (94%) currently chose to eat animal products, so we must continue to improve the lives of animals on farms through RSPCA Assured, as well as continuing to campaign for better legal protection.

We work with governments, consumers, retailers, food businesses, farmers and other key stakeholders to achieve positive change for farmed animals, but there's still so much to do. You can help improve the welfare of farm animals by supporting our work.

Farm ÅÝܽÊÓƵ standards

We develop welfare standards for each of the major farm animal species, which cover every aspect of their lives. These world-leading standards are continually updated and set to be stretching but achievable, in terms of animal husbandry and commercial viability. They aim to deliver improved ÅÝܽÊÓƵ above and beyond 'standard' or typical practice. The standards are applied through our farm assurance scheme, RSPCA Assured, as well as being used by a wide variety of other bodies and individuals in the UK and beyond.

RSPCA Assured

We encourage those who choose to eat meat, fish, eggs and dairy to select 'higher welfare' products, such as RSPCA Assured labelled food. This gives an assurance that the rearing, transportation and slaughter of the animal involved in producing the food have been inspected to our strict welfare standards.

Together, we make a difference
